Germany is one of the most developed countries in the world with a very high standard of living.

Everywhere you can experience new things, have fun and learn about history and traditions. Explore vibrant cities with amazing architecture, fabulous shopping and pulsating nightlife. Visit enchanting medieval villages and traditional wine villages with friendly festivals and regional specialities. Enjoy the picturesque countryside; perfect for walking or simply relaxing in. Castles, palaces and abbeys are the epitome of German romanticism.

As Germans are happy to show their country to foreign guests and thanks to an amazing infrastructure and great public transport it is easy to explore. Our German host families are very proud of their education and wish to encourage their children to learn to speak good English. Many German young people take part in the au pair program as part of a gap year experience.

Top city destinations include Berlin with the many Historic buildings to visit in former East Berlin, Checkpoint Charly and the remnants of the Berlin Wall. The nightlife here is also very vibrant and great fun. Munich in the south is also called ‘the gateway to the Alps’.  The famous ‘Octoberfest’ turns the city in to one huge party!

Hamburg, in the North, is the country's second largest city. It boasts one of the biggest harbours and has true maritime charm.

Cologne, founded by the Romans, is one of Germany's oldest cities. It is well known for its Cathedral and its rich architectural history but also its contemporary art scene, excellent museums, and the largest carnival in Germany. Heidelberg is one of the few German cities that wasn't destroyed in World War II. The Old Town has narrow cobble stone streets, the ruins of the once grand Heidelberg castle; this combined with the oldest university in the country and the idyllic river valley make Heidelberg one of the most picturesque destinations in Germany.

Outside the cities, regional Germany has a lot of variety. Local guesthouses are affordable and train travel is easy. Most host families will be happy to show you their local region but if you may wish to travel more or further.

The Black Forest mountains extend along the Rhine, close to Lake Constance, Switzerland and Alsace. The region is famed for its high peaks, wild, romantic gorges, great food and drink, distinctive traditional hats and cuckoo clocks. The Baltic Sea region in the far North has quiet beaches and great tradition of seafaring and maritime trade, reflected by its old-established Hanseatic towns, fashionable 1900s villa-style architecture, grand town houses and stately homes. (Hamburg). Main-Taunus region, where spas, abbeys and skyscrapers make up an impressive, diverse and richly historical region in the heart of the Rhine-Main area's commercial centre, covering the country around the river Main and the Taunus hills.

Bavaria is very popular with visitors, its extensive forests, fairy-tales castles, churches, cheeses, culture and lush green hillsides with chocolate box landscapes make it a great destination.

In this region you will find Neuschwanstein Castle, a 19th century Bavarian Castle or ‘Schloss’ on a hilltop in the rugged forest is apparently the most photographed building in Germany (Wikipedia) and may have provided inspiration for some of the Disney Castles! Don’t miss it!
