The Netherlands are best known for tulips, windmills and clogs. Amsterdam is famous for its liberal attitude, canals and diamonds. A tourist visiting The Netherlands, also called Holland, that is what they will see! But you; as an au pair, will get to see much more than that, as you will get the benefits of ‘living life the Dutch way’. The au pair program in the Netherlands welcomes nannies from all over the world so you are likely to make many International friends.
The Netherlands is a densely populated country, it is small (approximately the size of Scotland) flat, low (parts below sea level) and has lots of water, both around the country (fabulous coastline!) and inland; rivers, canals and lakes. With is being a small country, it is very easy to get around and discover lots of different places. You can easily travel between cities by train and within your own local area you can take the bicycle, a popular mode of transport in Holland.
Dutch people are generally very open-minded and tolerant of other cultures. The Netherlands is culturally diverse and the Dutch have sailed the world for centuries and still enjoy travelling today. Schools in the Netherlands teach languages from a very young age, so don’t be surprised if the children in your host family can already speak quite a bit of English. Also in shops and restaurants most people speak at least some English and are generally keen to try.
As au pair in Holland, you are likely to be invited to come along with your Dutch host family, as they will be keen to show you the country. It is also very easy to make your own way during your time off. Meet up with other au pairs or nannies from all over the world and explore together at weekends. The Dutch au pair agency also has a number of au pair activities you can take part in.
Places to visit are of course the major cities such as Amsterdam with the canals and the beautiful historic houses all throughout the city, red light district, shopping, museums and nightlife. Rotterdam has unique architecture with lots of amazing modern buildings, it is one of the busiest ports in the world and a boat trip in the harbour is a must. The Hague is often mentioned in the news, the Dutch government is based here and so is the International Court of Justice. The Hague is on the coast and flows in to Scheveningen; a coastal resort with regal hotels right on the sandy beach. Maastricht, in the southern tip of the Netherlands, is very cosmopolitan and sophisticated; make a weekend of it and visit also nearby Valkenburg.
Other ‘must see’ places include ‘Kinderdijk’, a historic landscape with a beautiful collection of windmills, Giethoorn, a town with canals connecting homes rather than streets, also called ‘Venice of the North’, Delft, famous for pottery and the movie ‘Girl with the Pearl Earring’ and Leiden, two vibrant university cities and Gouda, famous for cheese and candles and with a unique historic town square. Beaches all along the coast are fabulous for exploring. In the North and East of the country, the landscape is made up of agricultural land, forests and heath plains; ideal for hiking, cycling or riding.
If you like water sports, the Netherlands is a great place to be. At weekends lakes, rivers and canals are busy with windsurfers, canoes and boats of all sizes. The weather may not be warm (or dry) but the Dutch will not be kept indoors! They are also keen football (soccer) players with many famous players and teams. Other popular sports include cycling, hiking, tennis, hockey, basketball, golf, horse riding, and ice skating. Ask your host family what sports they play and see if you can come along, there is always a club nearby for you to join and make friends!
